On the way to the sixth floor, the mystery of the missing fourth gunman was solved. He’d taken a nasty leg wound. Running away from the fight, he’d made it halfway to the fourth floor landing before he bled out.
Stepping back through the hole, into the hallway, Mike tried to remain detached as he once again surveyed the damage.
Not long after voting the twelve survivors crouched down in the west stairwell, just outside the door out onto the third floor.
It was just after four in the afternoon according to the clocks that were still working, mostly analog watches and a couple of hardened cellphones. All twelve survivors were now official players. They’d all visited the vending machine and had a weapon to protect themselves.

By the time Jessica’s face had recovered its usual color, Amy and Yuki stepped out of their vending machine circle. It wasn’t immediately obvious what either of them had spent their credits on. Neither of them was wearing flashy armor or carrying a new weapon.

Out of credits, Mike checked on everyone else. They all still looked absorbed in what they were doing. He gave his new ax another swing, grinning as it whistled through the air. Stopping the swing mid motion he turned the ax over in his hand, caressing it almost lovingly.
